Making friends as a new mom in Belgrade.

Updated: Jul 8, 2024

"In the journey of motherhood, starting over in a big city is not just a physical relocation, but a profound spiritual and emotional transformation, where each challenge is an opportunity for growth and every setback a lesson in resilience."

- Brenda Milesic

As a new mom in a Belgrade city, making new friends can be a daunting task, especially when it feels like everyone around you is already established in their social circles. The language barrier for expat moms is also often a challenge and that is why Kurirano exists. However, with a little effort and intentionality, it's definitely possible to build a strong network of friends as a new mom.

  • First, start by joining local mom groups on social media or online forums, where you can connect with other moms who are going through similar experiences. There is an Expat moms in Belgrade group on facebook. Its a great place to start.

  • Attend events and meetups specifically designed for new moms, such as stroller walks or baby music classes, where you can meet others in person. We often have Kurirano mom events. these range from weekly to monthly sessions. Always check our events page here or on Instagram for details.

  • Additionally, consider taking a class or workshop that aligns with your interests, whether it's cooking, yoga, or art, which can be a great way to meet like-minded individuals. We do host a monthly class depending on your interests. Again, keep up with our events page for updates.

  • Finally, Belgrade has many free and paid play areas. Don't be afraid to strike up conversations with fellow parents at the park or playground - you never know who might become a new friend. To strike up conversations with fellow parents at the park or playground, start by being approachable and friendly. A simple "hello" or "hi, how's your day going?" can go a long way in breaking the ice. You can also try commenting on something specific about your child's activity or the surroundings, such as "Wow, your little one is really good at climbing!" or "I love this playground, my kids have so much fun here too." This shows you're interested in getting to know them and helps to build a connection. Additionally, be sure to listen actively and respond thoughtfully to what they have to say, and don't be afraid to share a little bit about yourself and your own experiences as a parent. With a little effort, you can turn a casual encounter into a meaningful conversation and potentially even make a new friend or two.

By putting yourself out there and being open to meeting new people, you can build a strong support system of fellow moms who understand the joys and challenges of motherhood. By actively engaging with different social circles and participating in various community events tailored for parents, you create opportunities to connect with a diverse range of individuals who share similar experiences and can offer valuable insights. Embracing this openness allows you to not only forge friendships but also cultivate a robust network of support where you can exchange advice, seek comfort during difficult times, and celebrate the milestones of motherhood together. This sense of camaraderie fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity, empowering you to navigate the complexities of raising children with a sense of resilience and shared wisdom. Through these connections, you not only enrich your own journey as a mother but also contribute to a collective tapestry of shared experiences that strengthen the bonds of your community.
